“Pure Drama from Behind the Spotlight” is a nostalgia look back at the first 50 years of the Kildare Drama Festival 1958 to 2008. Performers, groups, adjudicator’s reports, paper cuttings, photographs and stories of those entertaining evenings. In the opening chapter it looks at some early drama groups in Kildare.
A short review of the 14 festivals that were up and running between 1940 and the mid 50’s:- Fr. Mathew Festival Dublin, Western Drama Festival Tubbercurry, Feile Luimni, Clare, Kerry, South Leinster, Meath, North Cork, Cavan, Mayo, Cork City, New Inn, Ashbourne Rural, Sixmilebridge drama festivals and the first All-Ireland finals in Athlone in 1953.
Six participants, one from each decade, give a short memory of their involvement in drama at that time. Ray Darling, actor 1950’s – Barry Cassin, adjudicator 1960’s – Stan Hickey, backstage 1970’s, Kevin McCaffery, producer 1980’s, Fr. Adrian Carbery, Festival President 1990’s and Conor O’Connell, actor 2000’s.
Many well known actors and producers from stage and screen have “tread the boards” at the Kildare Festival. Tom Hickey, Gabriel Byrne, Joan Brosnan Walsh, Myles Dungan, Pat Moylan, Pat Kinnevane, Simon Delaney and Moya Doherty who wrote the foreword for the book.

Groups from many counties have staged plays at this festival over the 50 years. Kildare, Wexford, Dublin, Kilkenny, Carlow, Laois, Clare, Cork, Offaly, Meath, Galway, Wicklow, Tipperary, Mayo, Louth, Tyrone.
Co. Kildare Groups:
Allen: Allen were the group of the 60's - founded in 1957 by Fr. Tommy O’Reilly and was first known as “The Dramatic Society, Allen”. Winning the Rural Section in 1961, ’62, ’63, ’64, ’65, ’66, ’67 and ’68. In 1963 they were the only group in the history of the festival to win both the Rural and Open Section in the one year with “The Miracle Worker”. They became a household name in the Amateur Drama movement and appeared at most of the festivals throughout Ireland. “The Miracle Worker” was placed second in Athlone, “The Heiress” was and “Rebecca” fourth.
Athy:
Cadamstown: On the final night of the 1958 festival this north Kildare group staged a memorable production of Professor Tim. The adjudicator praised their presentation and picked out Tom Dempsey, who played the title role, as a convincing individual performance.
Caragh:
Rathangan: Rathangan staged two productions at the first festival and they were rural winners that year with Paddy Tynan as producer. Many stories told about those early productions. In 1972 the production of Severino was the restart of many fine productions from a Rathangan group. A Man for all Seasons, Inherit the Wind, Da in 1978 going on to win the All-Ireland rural finals. Mick and Mick winning in 1986. One will never forget The Country of the Gods in 1980.
Carbury:
Curragh:
Naas: If Allen were the Group of the 60’s Naas dominated the Open Section in the 70’s, winning the “Leinster Leader Cup” on seven occasions. Their winning production of “Abelard and Heloise” in 1974 was the first Kildare Open winner to go on and lift the “Esso Trophy” at the All-Ireland finals in Athlone, winning it again in 1979 with “The Crucible”.
Kilcullen:
Leixlip: Leixlip Theatre Group was founded in 1974 and their first production, that year, was “On Trial”. They first came to Kildare festival in 1976 with “Many Young Men of Twenty” winning the “Bill Rea Cup”. Tom Fox won Best Actor for playing “Danger Mulally” and Paddy Travers, Aine Ryan and Mick Cunningham received “Certificate’s Of Merit”. They came into their own, at Kildare Festival, in the 1980’s. They were winners in the Open Section in 1980, ’85 and ’87. They also won Best Producer each of those years. They also won three Best Actor and two Best Actress awards.
Monasterevin:
Kildare: We briefly look at music and drama in Kildare town and district from 1884. Tracing drama groups in Kildare town from the 1920's - Kildare Players, Cill Dara Golf Club Players, St. Brigid's Dramatic Society. Between 1958 and 2008 a number of local groups staged productions in the Drama Festival - Muintir na Tire Dramatic Club, Phoenix Players, Kildare Theatre Group and Silken Thomas Players who with their presentation of Larry Kramer’s controversial AIDS drama “The Normal Heart”, landed the All-Ireland Open title in the Dean Crowe Hall Athlone on Sunday 6th May 2007. They were presented with the overall trophy by Aonghus McAnally, R.T.E. Nine qualifying groups completed.
Results:- 1st…Silken Thomas Players, Kildare with “The Normal Heart”.
2nd…Wexford Drama Group with “By The Bog of Cats”.

Newbridge:
Prosperous:
We trace three local groups, Brownstown, Kildare I.C.A. Drama Group and Lackagh Drama Group. Lackagh native, Paddy McCormack published The Songs and Poems of Patrick McCormack in 1973 - The Kildare Exile and Lackagh are two numbers from that publication.
Lackagh Drama Group: Photographs from their productions.
Brownstown: As far back as 1888 Brownstown Dramatic Gaelic League Club were writing and staging some of their own plays.
Kildare I.C.A. Drama Group: A number of photographs from their productions in the '80.

Co. Wexford Groups:
Taghmon Drama Group, in 1960, was the first Co. Wexford group to enter the Kildare Drama Festival, with Rev. James Murphy winning best producer. In 1965 Monaseed Drama Group entered with The Wood of the Whispering and again in 1966 this group staged two plays – a 3 Act called Bior and a 1 Act, The Proposal. Their producer was Rev. Fr. O’Regan. 1968 saw Gorey Little Theatre staging a memorable production of Sive. This Co. Wexford group were regular visitors to this festival and in 1984 they were the first Co. Wexford group to win the open section with Translations. In the year 2000 there were five Co. Wexford groups competing over the eight nights. Down the years County Wexford Groups have won this Festival on five occasions:- 1984, 1990, 1991, 1994 and 2000. Other groups taking part: Ferns Dramatic Society, Ballycogley Players, Enniscorthy Theatre Group, Wayside Players, Bunclody – Kilmyshall Drama Group, Kilmuckridge Drama Group, Boolavogue Drama Group.

Co. Carlow Groups:
The first Co. Carlow group to take part in the Kildare festival was in 1960. On Friday 26th February “Cead Schoil” Carlow staged Taibshe na Trathnona. In 1961 Tullow Drama Group won the 1 Act section - Tomas Mac Anna was the adjudicator. Tullow returned again in 1965 when adjudicator, Maura Cranny, said their production of That Family Feeling was an excellent comedy, full of good clean fun. Also from Tullow, in 1997, Marie Jackson won best actress in the confined section. Regular visitors , to the festival, over the years were Killeshin Muintir na Tire drama group and the Carlow Little Theatre group. Killeshin were rural winners in 1968, Laz Costello – best actor and John Ryan best producer. Carlow Little Theatre were open winners in 1990 and 2004. They won many production and acting awards – Best Actress three years in a row, best supporting actress, best actor, and production award on a number of occasions.
The book “Pure Drama” traces their participation, in the festival, over its 50 year history.
Co. Dublin Groups:
The Esso Staff Theatre Group were the first Dublin group to take part in the festival. They staged Night Must Fall on Sunday 21st February 1960. A large number of Dublin groups staged plays over the 50 years - British Railways, Metro, Bank of Ireland T.G., Rathcoole, 33 Players, Clondalkin, Sundrive, Olivians, Sandyford, Mercury, Estuary, Iona Players, Coolmine, La Touche Players, Classic Revival, Dublin Shakespeare Society, Club Players, and Blue Transit Theatre Company. Rathcoole won the rural section on three occasions. Seven Dublin groups each won the open section once. Sandford’s production of Smiling Through in 1964, with their garden set, gave me one of my best memories over the years when they pulled portion of the ancient Grey Abbey church up the Grey Abbey road to the C.Y.M.S. hall.
The book “Pure Drama” traces their participation, in the festival, over its 50 year history.
Co. Kilkenny Groups:
In 1960 Ballyhale Drama Group with The New Gosson were the first Co. Kilkenny group to stage a play at the festival. In 1994 the Gaslight Theatre Group were clear winners in the open section and won a number of individual awards. Scott Marshall was adjudicator.
The book “Pure Drama” traces their participation, in the festival, over its 50 year history.
